Why your SG dining bonuses don't work at Japanese restaurants — and what to do about it
What is Monkey MCC?
“Monkey MCC” is SG credit card community slang for when Japanese merchants get assigned unexpected Merchant Category Codes. A restaurant in Tokyo might code as retail (MCC 5399), a ramen shop might show up as a vending machine operator (MCC 5441), and a sushi chain could register as entertainment (MCC 7997).
This matters because Singapore credit cards give bonus miles for specific MCCs. Your UOB Lady's Card earns 4X UNI$ (10 mpd) on dining — but only when the merchant codes as MCC 5812 (Eating Places, Restaurants) or 5814 (Fast Food Restaurants). If that Japanese izakaya codes as 5399 (Miscellaneous Retail), you get base rate instead.
The result: you planned for 10 mpd on your Japan dining spend, but you're getting 1.4 mpd. That's an 86% drop in rewards.
Why Japan is Different
Acquirers Don't Match
Japanese payment processors (GMO, SB Payment, etc.) assign MCCs differently from Singapore acquirers. A chain restaurant might code one way at one location and differently at another.
Vending Machines Everywhere
Japan has 5 million+ vending machines. Some restaurant POS systems share merchant accounts with vending operations, causing dining transactions to code as MCC 5441 (Candy, Nut, Confectionery Stores).
Konbini = Mixed MCC
Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) sell both food and non-food items. The MCC depends on what the terminal registers as — sometimes grocery (5411), sometimes retail (5399).
Contactless vs Chip
Japan still relies heavily on chip-and-PIN. Contactless payments (payWave) may route through different acquirers than chip transactions at the same merchant, resulting in different MCCs.
What To Do About It
Verify Before You Pay
Ask the merchant (or check the receipt) for the MCC before deciding which card to use. Use the Check MCC browser extension to auto-detect MCCs at online checkout.
Carry Backup Cards
Don't rely on one card. Bring a general overseas spend card (DBS Altitude, UOB PRVI Miles) as backup for when your dining card doesn't trigger the bonus.
Use No-FCY-Fee Cards for Big Purchases
For large purchases (electronics, hotel bills), the 3.25% FCY fee often outweighs the miles earned. Use Trust Cashback or similar no-fee cards to save outright.
