How to choose a cashback card in Singapore

Cashback cards live or die on three numbers: the bonus rate, the minimum monthly spend to unlock it, and the cap that limits how much of your spending earns it. A 8% headline with a S$1,600 minimum spend and S$30-per-category caps can realistically earn less than a flat 1.6% no-strings card β€” it depends entirely on your spending pattern.

Flat-rate vs category cards

Flat-rate cards (Citi Cash Back+ at 1.6%, SC Simply Cash at 1.5%, Amex True Cashback at 1.5% ongoing) pay the same rate on everything with no minimum spend. Category cards (Citi SMRT, DBS Live Fresh, HSBC Live+, Maybank F&F) pay 5–8% on selected MCC categories but only after a minimum spend β€” and fall back to 0.22–0.3% on everything else. If you can't reliably hit the minimum spend, a flat-rate card usually wins.

Why MCC codes decide your cashback

Card issuers don't see "Grab" or "Shopee" β€” they see the merchant category code the acquirer files. The same app can earn bonus or base rates depending on the exact MCC of each transaction. Our MCC database and MCC code lookup let you check any merchant before you swipe.

Estimate your earnings

Run your monthly spending through the cashback calculator to compare real dollar returns across cards, or use the card finder to describe your spending profile and get matched recommendations.

Check a merchant's MCC before you spend

Bonus cashback is awarded per MCC code, not per brand. Search the database to see which code any Singapore merchant files under.
